Sportlogiq Standout: Joonas Korpisalo
Selected by: Matt Perri – Director of Hockey Operations
Metrics: Save % on Quick Release Shots Following a Seam Pass, Actual to Expected Goals Against
One of every four quick-release shots on net following a seam pass is a goal. In Columbus’ Friday 4-3 OT loss, Elvis Merzlikins faced five of these shots and was beaten three times, including the OT winner by Austin Matthews. In last night’s series-clinching shutout win for the Blue Jackets, Joonas Korpisalo faced three shots off a seam pass and stopped them all. In fact, he hasn’t allowed a goal off a seam pass all playoffs, an impressive run considering his regular-season save percentage of 0.658 on these shots—42nd among goalies with more than 5 GP (Igor Shesterkin led the league at 0.895).
His -6.2 Actual to Expected Goals Against in the playoffs means he’s saved his team more goals than any other goalie. Elvis Merzlikin’s numbers are nothing to scoff at themselves—Korpisalo and Merzlikin’s combined playoff numbers are best in the NHL, so Torts has two capable options at his helm.
